Dalam waktu dekat, umat manusia telah dirusak oleh penyakit jamur (a mutasi dari unilateralis Ophiocordyceps ). Orang yang terinfeksi telah berubah menjadi pemakan daging yang cepat dan tidak berpikiran, disebut sebagai "lapar". Satu-satunya harapan manusia adalah sekelompok kecil anak-anak generasi kedua hibrida yang mendambakan daging hidup tetapi tetap memiliki kemampuan untuk berpikir dan belajar. Anak-anak itu dipenjara oleh sekelompok tentara yang dipimpin oleh Sersan Eddie Parks, dan pergi ke "sekolah" di sebuah pangkalan militer di Kabupaten , tempat mereka diujicoba oleh Dr. Caroline Caldwell. Helen Justineau bertanggung jawab untuk mendidik dan mempelajari anak-anak. Di antara mereka ada seorang gadis luar biasa bernama Melanie.
